Rangamati Correspondent :
Heavy rainfall over couple of days has jeopardised electricity supply badly in Rangamati while officials of Rangamati Electricity Department are optimistic that the situation will improve soon.
As a result, electricity supply even in Rangamati district town has been hampered, leading people to live in darkness.
Necessary electricity supply to Rangamati through gridline is facing setback, said superintended engineer of Rangamati Power Development Board Dipak Khisha. He hoped the situation will be normal soon.
The crisis developed on the first day of Ashar (3rd Bangla month) when an electricity tower came under threat following landslide along the Halda river in Chittagong, resulting suspension of electricity supply to Rangamati, added Dipak Khisha.
The power board generally supplies electricity to Rangamati through a 45 kilometres Chandraghona-Boroichhari line. But electricity through this line faces setback when tree branches fall over it following any storm or ghastly wind. It takes plenty of time to identify affected places in the remote areas and to repair and restore power supply that leaves people of the region in complete darkness, added Khisha.
Admitting the inconvenience of the power line Dipak Khisha told journalists that the problem will solved soon. About 8.5- 9.0 megawatt of electricity is supplied to Rangamati through national grid to meet the demand of 16,000 consumers at Sadar upazila.
As the electricity is supplied through the 45 kilometres remote power line instead of the main gridline so the problems remain unsolved, said Dipak.
Moreover, 2.5 megawatts of electricity is supplied to Betbunia satellite sub-station in Kawkhali Upazila of the district under special arrangement due to suspension of Hathazari line that led the authority to enforce load shedding often, Dipak added.
He further said Rangamati people will get rid of load-shedding if electricity is supplied through Hathazari line.
