Chittagong Bureau :
Frequent load-shedding has been creating severe miseries to the city dwellers in the recent days and the productions in the industrial units are also being hampered to the maximum extents.
Following the decrease of power supply from the national grid, this situation was created , concerned sources said.
The power supply from national grid was minimized by 200 MWs following the shut down of Raozan Thermal Power Plant and the Sikalbaha Power Plant in Chitagong from August 25 last.
These two power plants depends on natural gas and following the suspension of gas supply to these two power plants , the generation remain closed .
Natural gas is the main raw materials for fertilizer factories and hence gas supply resumes to giant KAFCO and CUFL fertilizer factories of Chittagong as per directives of the concerned ministry, a Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Co sources said .
Sources said the generation capacity of these two power plants was 630 MWs and the national g rid is deprieved of huge power from two closed units. PDB sources said the average demand of power in Chittagong is about 700 MWs and now national grid is supplying only 500 MWs for the last one week and hence load shedding is witnessing about 6-7 hours a day leaves city dwellers and its outskirts into severe sufferings.
President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahbubul Alam told The New Nation that industrial units are paying power rate @ Tk.15 per unit and we proposed for considering the high power rate for industrial consumers to the concerned authority.
He also said, following the long load- shedding , the production costs in the industrial units automatically go up .
Mentionable that considering the maximum fertilizer consumptions season now , the KAFCO and CUFL resume production suspending the gas supply to two power plants in Chittagong from last week, KGDL sources said.
