The government has added 155MW power to the national grid and another 200MW more to be added by the end this month.
“The national grid is getting 155MW on test basis from Ashuganj and another 200MW would be added to the grid by the end of this month,” Managing Director of Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited Engineer Nurul Alam told BSS yesterday.
He said Ashuganj Power Company Limited, the second largest power station is currently generating around 950MW power for the national grid, adding, “200MW Modular Power Plant would go on production from this month.”
With the new power production the government is expecting to generate 13301 MW power by the end of this year and currently, country’s 70 per cent people have access to electricity and this has been possible due to bold and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to a source of the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.
The source said the government has augmented generation of power, expanded transmission, distribution lines and improved capacity of other sectors aimed at achieving the desired economic growth to become a middle income country by 2021.
It said the electricity generation reached 11,265MW from 3,268MW in 2009 and the government has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country.
The government has a vision to generate 20,000 MW aimed at bringing all citizens under electricity coverage by 2021. India’s Reliance Group proposed to invest US Dollars three billion in the country to set up four power plants with a total generation capacity of 3,000MW, the ministry source said.
It said presently, the country is producing 11,265 MW electricity, which covers 68 per cent of people across the country.
The country is now importing power from India, while talks are on for importing electricity from Nepal and Bhutan under sub-regional cooperation.
