It will take a year for power to be transmitted to Bangladesh from Tripura’s Palatana Power Station, Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, energy advisor to the prime minister, has said.
The agreement between the two countries is for the transmission of 100MW of power but Bangladesh might get more if ties stay well between the neighbours, he told reporters at Zero Point while entering Tripura through the border at Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura on Sunday.
Tripura Power Minister Manik Dey received him on the other side.
Chowdhury told bdnews24.com he was visiting Agartala to attend the inauguration of two units of Palatana Power Station.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the units on Monday.
There were talks to bring gas from Myanmar to India through Bangladesh, when BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was in power, he said.
“Ministers from three countries were supposed to come and sign the treaty … the papers were ready too but Khaleda Zia didn’t approve it.”
Chowdhury said the treaty could have helped Bangladesh besides India. Every home in Bangladesh would get electricity supply by 2021, he added.
Power generation has been increased to 11,000 MW from just 4,500MW during the present government’s tenure.
