The power and energy sectors are likely to receive a double allocation in the upcoming budget for development for fiscal 2015-16 than the current fiscal.
According to official sources, about Tk 20,000 crore is likely to be allocated for these two vital sectors as a development budget for the next fiscal 2015-16.
In the current fiscal (2014-15), the development budget was Tk 11,540 crore of which the Power Division had received Tk 9,284 crore and the Energy Division’s allocation was Tk 2,256 crore.
According to the officials, the power and energy sectors will be the receiver of second largest allocation for the development of infrastructure after the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.
Of the new outlay, the Power Division official said, the power sector will receive about Tk 16,000 crore plus while the Energy Division about Tk 356.50 crore.
“The Power Division’s allocation will be spent mainly for new base load power plant installation and improvement of transmission and distribution networks,” said a senior official of the Power Division.
The government has planned to add about 2,383 MW new electricity to the national grid through implementation of more than 10 power plant
projects along with improvement of transmission and distribution networks in the coming fiscal 2015-16.
At present, the country’s available power generation stands at 7,000 MW.
Of the planned 2,383 MW of power, 1,285 MW will come from public sector while 1098 MW from private sector plants.
The new under-construction power plants include 100 MW Shahjibazar, 250 MW Barapukuria, 360 MW Bheramara, 300-4500 MW Ghorashal, 450 MW Ashuganj, 150-300 MW Chittagong coal-fired, 150-300 MW Khulna coal-fired, 300-450 MW Bibiyana-I, 300-450 MW Maona, 200-850 MW LNG-based power plant.
On the other hand, the Energy Division’s major ongoing projects include setting up of Rashidpur condensate fractionation plant, installation of Bibiyana Dhanua gas pipeline, feasibility for coal-methane gas extraction, and construction of gas transmission line from Sripur to Jaydevpur.
