A new power distribution project is being implemented in Rajshahi region in a bid to upgrade its power distribution system besides bringing two lakh new subscribers under electricity coverage.
The project titled “Power Distribution Development Project, Rajshahi Zone” will be implemented by December, 2018, starting from July, 2015 with the main thrust of improving overall power supply in the zone.
Power Development Board (PDB) will implement the project in 60 upazilas of eight districts of the zone at a cost of Taka 915 crore. The government will provide Taka 880 crore as project cost and PDB will bear nearly Taka 35 crore from its own resources.
“This development project will reduce four percent system loss,” Hazrat Ali, Additional Chief Engineer of PDB, said. Moreover, some five lakh customers will get power supply in several phases within 2018, he added narrating the salient features of the mega scheme.
Under this project, works of new power cables and lines of 1,375 kilometres and renovation of electric power cables and lines of 1,808 kilometres will be done.
Nine hundred and fifty-two new transformers will be procured and 638 transformers will be repaired alongside acquiring 11 acres of land and developing 49,150 cubic metres.
As a result of renovation of power cables and setting up of new power lines, 775 megawatt electricity load will be increased and system loss will be decreased by 4 per cent. Also 30 kilometres 33kv, 11kv, .04 kv synchronised power cables respectively will be set up.
Apart from this, 33 kv new lines on 221 kilometres and 33 kv lines on 218 kilometers, 11 kv new lines on 341 kilometers and 33kv lines on 375 respectively will be renovated.
Moreover, new electric supply sub-centres will be established and old sub-centres will be renovated and new transformers will be set up and old ones will be repaired.
Engineer Ali said around 21.7 million people live in 16,493 square kilometers of area of Rajshahi zone where power demand is increasing day by day for growing power use in irrigation and expanding industries. Auto rice mills, cold storages, poultry farms and various agro-based industries are now being set up in the areas.
Besides, an EPZ has been set up in Pabna which shot up power demand alongside increasing the number of educational institutions in Rajshahi.
The areas to cover under this project will be Rajshahi Sadar, Rajshahi City Corporation, Gomostapur, Godagari and Tanore upazilas. In addition to that identical projects will also be implemented in Chapainawabganj Sadar, Shibganj, Natore Sadar, Pabna Sadar, Ishurdi, Sirajganj Sadar, Bogra Sadar, Sherpur, Santahar, Dupchachia and Shibganj upazilas.
Once the project is completed, some two lakh new subscribers will get power connections and the system loss will reduce by four percent, Engineer Ali added. Besides, by 2025, another five lakh people of the zone will get electricity connections, he added.
