Experts at a workshop here have said the flourishing poultry sector might be most effective in attaining sustainable development goals (SDGs) by reducing poverty and meeting nutritional demand.
“The mass media should properly focus on achievement in poultry and raise issues for further flourishing the sector,” said Professor Dr Tahera Yeasmin of the Department of Dairy and Poultry Science at Dinajpur Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University.
Professor Tahera made the observations at concluding ceremony of the media workshop here styled ‘Reporting on Poultry Issues’ as main resource person on Saturday afternoon.
Watchdog Bangladesh organised the workshop with assistance of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council.
Thirty journalists from the local and national dailies, news agencies and television channels participated in the workshop moderated by Executive Director of Watchdog Bangladesh Sazzad Hossain.
Professor Tahera said chicken eggs and meat are being produced by adopting latest scientific technologies for meeting nutritional demand of the growing population and cutting poverty, maintaining maximum safety for human health.
“During the next 10 years, Rangpur region might lead the country’s poultry industry as the private sector entrepreneurs have been setting up modernised feed mills, hatcheries and poultry farms in the region more than other regions,” she said.
Another resource person District Livestock Officer Dr Mahbubur Rahman said the flourishing poultry industry has changed economic portrait of Rangpur division during past 10 years.
He said 139 poultry farms produced 140 crore pieces of eggs against the demand of 143 lakh pieces and 6.02 lakh tonnes of chicken meat against the demand of 6.72 lakh tonnes for 1.55 crore people in Rangpur division last year increasing production by 10 times in 10 years.
“A silent revolution has taken place in the poultry industry in Rangpur region to meet animal protein demand with cutting poverty by creating huge employments,” Dr Mahbubul said.
Joint Editor of the Daily Prothom Alo Sohrab Hossain, Business Editor of Jamuna Television Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu, Joint-secretary of Rangpur District Poultry Industry Owners’ Association Mahmudul Hassan, among others, addressed.
Chief Guest Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman asked journalists to play due role for further flourishing poultry industry in the region to meet protein demand of the growing population.
Later, he distributed certificates among the participating journalists and awards among winners of the reporting competition on poultry related issues.
