Leaders of the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC) on Wednesday have sought direct interference of the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister to save the poultry industry in the country.

They urged the Prime Minister to continue tax exemption at least for another 10 years, considering the demand for animal protein of 16 crore people, reducing the existing malnutrition rate and building a healthy nation.
The poultry leaders demanded it while addressing a meeting at the office of BPICC in the city.
Addressing the meeting, Moshiur Rahman, Convener of BPICC said, The income tax on commercial poultry farming and hatchery was zero, but now the highest ceiling is 10 per cent , income tax on poultry feed was 3 per cent but now its upto 10 per cent. “It will impact on rural economy, employment, demand, supply, future investment”, said the leader. He demanded zero tax on poultry sector. He urged the Prime Minister to continue tax exemption at least for another 10 years, considering the demand for animal protein of 16 crore people, reducing the existing malnutrition rate and building a healthy nation.
Sudhir Chowdhury, President of the Bangladesh Agro Feed Ingredients Importers and Suppliers Association (BAFIITA) said, “We have been facing serious difficulties in clearing imported raw materials from Chittagong Port. It’s causing unnecessary delay, damaging items and hiking costs which are other vital reasons for increasing production cost of poultry and fish feeds”.
Dr Nazrul Islam, Secretary of Animal Health Companies Association of Bangladesh (AHCAB) said, the industry suffered losses of around 5.5 thousand crores from 2007 to 2011 for Avian Influenza (AI) outbreak. “Since the last two years, the industry is almost free from AI virus because of some timely initiatives of the government including issuance of permission for using AI vaccine. But unfortunately, 4 per cent ATV and 5 per cent AIT have been imposed this year on the life saving vaccine import”, said he. He urged the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister to take their issues seriously. He also urged the concerned ministries, policymakers and stakeholders to have meetings with the farmers and entrepreneurs to resolve the crisis and to save the poultry industry with an investment of 25 thousand crore taka.
