Poultry industrialists demanded tax exemption up to 2021 to ensure nutrition for all at Poultry Farmers’ Congress held in Comilla on Saturday.
Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC) organised the congress where five hundred poultry farmers and entrepreneurs from Dhaka, Chittagong and 16 upazillas of Comilla attend at a colorful rally and discussion session.
The farmers claimed that poultry sector can play a major role to meet the desired protein demand. The production of egg and chicken will have double and so do the investment, they said. However, the poultry farmers demanded tax exemption up to 2021.
While addressing as the Chief Guest of a discussion held at the Shaheed Abu Jahid Auditorium of Comilla Zilla School, Hasanuzzaman Kallol, District Commissioner, Comilla said, after achieving self-sufficiency in food, the hon’ble Prime Minister has expressed her commitment to ensure nutrition for all.
To meet the development goal of the present government, “We need healthy mother and child in every home. We also have to build a meritorious future generation; and for that we have to make available egg, milk, fish and meat for all at a reasonable price”. Kallol urged the private entrepreneurs to join hands with the government to make the dream come true and make the country self-reliant.
Moshiur Rahman, convener, BPICC said that the poultry famers and entrepreneurs are passing critical time as the government withdrew tax exemption from the current fiscal year.
Tax on poultry income has been increased from zero to maximum 10 per cent and income tax on feed industry increased from 3 to 10 per cent. Besides, tax on hatchery has also been increased up to 10 per cent. Duty on essential raw materials maize, soya meal and oil cake also imposed at the rate of 5 per cent.
On top of that AIT, VAT imposed. Due to these, the production cost of egg, chicken, feed and day-old-chicks hiked up. The farmers are the ultimate loser of such decision. Therefore the government should re-consider their decision and announce the sector tax exemption at least up to 2021. Rahman said, the BPICC is working to control the recent price hike of day-old-chicks. “Hope the price will come down shortly”, said Rahman.
The poultry farmers said, due to absence of proper vaccine mortality of poultry birds augmented. “We are in threat due to outbreak of avian influenza in the neighbouring India. They demanded to form a fund to safe-guard the farmers during outbreak or emergency. They also demanded subsidies like agricultural sector. They argued that the foreign companies are grabbing the local farmers which are a real threat for a sustainable and self-reliant poultry industry in Bangladesh. Therefore the government must take the issue seriously and ensure a level playing field for all. They also demanded cooperation from the law enforcing agencies to stop smuggling of egg and chicks in the border belt.
Dr Md Mujibur Rahman, Civil Surgeon, Comilla, said that the white meat (chicken meat) is gradually getting market of the red meat globally. The consumers have now become more health conscious. Dr Rahman said the general mass is being confused of the prescription of the doctors or physicians as they are making confusing comments against egg. “Cholesterol is not at all harmful rather beneficial for health” according to the current scientific studies, said Rahman.
