Poultry farming has shown a unique way to hundreds of unemployed youth and given a significant boost to the rural economy in the district.
District livestock officer Sankar Kumar Bosak told BSS that the state-run banks and other financial institutions have been providing loans under the government’s Poverty Alleviation Programs to establish different income generating activities like poultry farms.
The field-level officials of the district livestock department under the supervision of the veterinary doctors have been rendering medicare service to get rid of different diseases, including bird flu, in the poultry farms as well as to improve the health condition of the poultry birds, he said.
There are 3000 big, medium and small size poultry farms have been creating jobs for hundreds of unemployed people and boosting rural economy in the district.
Talking to the BSS, Sazzad Hussain, owner of “Milon poultry farm” at village Rouha of Netrakona Sader upazila said Taka 1000 to 1200 is needed for rearing a hybrid chicken, which lays 320 to 350 eggs a year. “So, I can easily maintain my family and make some money” he added.
Sazzad further said, he got loan from a commercial bank to run the poultry farm that improved his socio-economic condition.
Rafiqul Islam Appolo, owner of Appolo poultry farm in Kailati area under Netrakona Sader upazila said Taka 2.50 to 3 is needed for feeding a layer chicken every day.
He was encouraged by other poultry farm owners as well as officials of the livestock department to establish the poultry farm, having 8000 chicken now.
Appolo also informed that he got loan from Bangladesh Krishi Bank for running his poultry farm properly.
Over a dozen of poultry farm owners of the district said the lifestyle condition of many unemployed person in the district have been changed by setting up poultry farms.
They underlined the need for setting up a big cold storage in the district to preserve the eggs of the poultry birds prior to marketing.
