After the fixation of the price of potato, which was once regarded as the most popular and cheapest vegetable items for all classes of people, by the government it suddenly disappeared from the local markets and after a long absence it once again appeared in the markets. But its supply is very poor and the price is out of the reach of the commoners. The commodity is now being sold here at Tk.48 to Tk.50 per kg according to qualities as against of Tk.40 to Tk.50. An elderly retailer of potato of Bagerhat district main market told this correspondent, I did not find so high price of potato in 70 years of my life. It is a rare instance.
Price of (local) onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen, came down to Tk.60 per kg from Tk. 75. But its price once again shot up in the local markets. It is now being sold here at Tk. 65 or more per kg according to qualities.
But price of winter vegetables has downward trend in the local markets. Cauliflower is now being sold here at Tk. 40 per kg as against Tk. 60 previously. Cabbage is selling at Tk. 40, reddish at Tk. 30, carrot at Tk. 60, egg plant at Tk. 60, papaw at Tk. 30, Karalla at Tk. 60, bean at Tk.60 and cucumber at Tk. 40 per kg. Green chili is now selling here at Tk. 120 per kg as against of Tk. 200 previously. Paln Shak is being sold here at Tk 10 per small bundle while Lal Shak is sold at Tk. 20 per small bundle. Pumpkin is selling in the markets at Tk.40 per kg while Lau is selling at Tk.25 to Tk.60 per piece according to different sizes.
At present supply of all both local and sea fish is abundantly available in the local markets. But their price is not cheap.
Price of beef is selling at Tk.500 or more per kg and mutton at Tk.750 or more per kg. Price of poultry birds, particularly the local poultry is also high. Price of farm produced eggs shows a downward trend. It is now being sold hereTk.28 to Tk.34 per hally of four as against of Tk.32 to Tk.36 previously. But the produced egg is selling Tk.52 to Tk.60 per hally of four.
