Potato, the most popular vegetable items for all classes of people has gone out of market following the fixation of its price by the government, jeopardising people in general and the middle classe, income group and the poor in particular. Just after the fixation of its price it was being sold in limited shops at the fixed price. But within a few days the commodity went out of the market. The commodity, if available in limited shops, it is being sold at Tk.40 or more per kg. But whenever the local administration is visible in the market in order to supervise it, the commodity is sold at the fixed price. But after their departure price of the commodity is raised.
Meanwhile the commodity has disappeared from the market within a short time. It may be mentioned here that so long potato was regarded as the cheapest and most popular vegetable. But this year it turned upside down due to corona pandemic in the country.
But the price of onion, a must item for Bengali kitchen is stable at present in the district markets. The locally produced onion is now being sold here at Tk.85 to Tk.90 per kg, according to qualities. But Indian imported onion is now out of the market. Abdullah Sardar, a retailer of onion of the local main bazar told this correspondent that just with the ban imposed by the Indian government on the import of onion to Bangladesh a tendency has developed among the customers to purchase the commodity more and more. But this tendency of the purchasers disappeared and consequently, the price of the commodity is stable. Price of rice was increased by Tk.2 to TK.5 per kg a few days ago. But at present it price also stable in the markets.
But the price of all kinds of vegetables is abnormally high in the local markets. Newly appeared bean is being sold here at Tk.170 per kg as against Tk.70 sold during the corresponding period of the last year. Reddish has appeared in the market. It is sold here at Tk.60 per kg though its quality is very inferior. Egg plant is sold here at Tk.80, arum at Tk.50, Oll (an edible stem), at Tk.70, Karalla at Tk.60, Mousim (one kind of beans) at Tk.100, Uchchhey at Tk.80, Patol at Tk.60, cabbage (inferior quality) at Tk.80, Ladies figure at Tk.50 to Tk.60, Jhinga at Tk.60, Kushi at Tk.60, Kakrol at Tk.80 and Pepe at Tk.40 per kg. Gourd is being sold in the local markets at Tk.30 to Tk.100 or more, according to different sizes.
After the ban imposed on the catching of hilsa on October 14, price of all kinds of fish has increased in the local markets. Following the high prices of vegetables and fish, price of eggs has shot up.
Farm produced egg is being sold in the local markets at Tk.36 to Tk.38 per hally of four as against of Tk.24 to TK.26 while the locally produced egg is selling here at Tk.52 to Tk.56 per hally instead of Tk.44 to Tk.48 previously.
Price of beef is selling at Tk.500 per kg and red meat at Tk.800 per kg. Price of poultry birds is also high.
Prices of all kinds of edible oil has also increased in the markets.
