After postponement for uprising Covid-19 infection, the first phase of Union Parishad (UP) election will be held on June 21.
The 371 UP election will be held on June 21, said EC Secretary Mohammad Humayun Kabir Khandaker at a press conference in the media center of the EC office in the city’s Agargaon on Wednesday.
On the same day, election at Laxmipur-2 and 11 municipalities will be held in the sixth phase.
On February 22, Parliament secretariat issued a gazette notification announcing that the Laxmipur 2 constituency fell vacant because of Kazi Papul’s moral turpitude.
He was accused of human trafficking, labour exploitation and violation
of the residency law, money laundering, and bribing Kuwaiti officials with millions of dollars to win contracts and to recruit Bangladeshi workers.
Humayun Kabir Khandaker said, the Election Commission (EC) will hold by-elections to three parliamentary constituencies on July 14 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to schedules for by-elections at Sylhet-3, Dhaka-14 and Cumilla-5 constituencies, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is June 15.
Returning officers will examine the papers on June 17, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 23.
Sylhet-3 seat fell vacant following ruling Awami League MP Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury’s death on March 11, Dhaka-14 following AL MP Aslamul Haque’s death on April 4, and Cumilla-5 after AL MP Abdul Matin Khasru’s death on April 14.
Electronic Voting Machines will be used at Laxmipur 2 by polls, 30 of the UPs and all of the municipalities.
On March 3, the EC announced to hold by-polls to Lakshmipur-2 constituency, polls to 371 UPs and 11 municipalities on April 11. On April 1, the commission postponed all the elections due to the Covid-19 attack.
There are 4,500 union parishads in the country.
The first five phases of the municipality polls were held on December 28, January 16, January 30, February 14 and February 28.
The ruling Awami League won 80 percent of the mayor posts in 230 municipalities.
