UNB, Rajshahi :
A man, who received bullet injuries in a spate of clashes among the supporters of two chairman candidates and police during vote-counting of the union parishad (UP) polls at Sharundi village in Bagmara upazila on Saturday afternoon, died at CDM Private
Hospital early Monday, raising the death toll in the incident to tree.
Deceased Jahidul Islam, an activist of Awami League, succumbed to his injures at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital at about 5:00 am, said managing director of the hospital Koyel Hossain. Earlier on Saturday, two people were killed and at least 30 others, including five policemen, were injured in the clash.
Witnesses said, followers of Awami League-nominated chairman candidate Jan Boksh brought out a procession in the afternoon at Sharundi village of Aushpara UP. At one stage, supporters of AL-rebel candidate Shahidul Islam swooped on the followers of Jan Boksh around 5pm, triggering the clash. Several chases and counter chases took place during the 30-minute long melee. On information, members of police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control by firing four rounds of bullets.
Jan Box claimed Siddiqur and Momtaz died on the spot due to police firing. Sub-inspector (SI) Masud Ali, in-charge of Hatgangopara police investigation centre, said police opened fire to bring the situation under control, but could not confirm whether the deaths were caused by the firing.
Contacted, Deputy Inspector General (Rajshahi Range) of Police M Khurshed Hossain told UNB that Siddique died due to cardiac arrest during the clash. Though police fired four rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control, it could not be confirmed immediately whether another person was killed in police firing or due to the gunfire exchange between the two rival groups, he said.
