DU Correspondent :
The media need to play a pro-active role in preserving democracy and upholding the values of the Constitution in the country. Media is not the opposition to democracy, said the State Minister for
Information, Hasanul Haque Inu on Tuesday. The media would have to work with responsibility and contribute to the united efforts to build a democratic country, he said.
‘We believe in freedom of expression. Right to Information Act has been enacted to make information access to all’, said the Minister as the chief guest at the first National Conference on Mass Communication and Journalism held in the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU).
The two days conference was arranged by the Mass Communication and Journalism Department of DU with the theme ‘mapping the terrain of mass media research in Bangladesh: critical perspective’ where around 45 personnel from around the country will present their papers on different perspectives of media.
Media must criticise the government and at the same time should keep in mind that it would be based on facts, and in no way on dream. Constructive criticism can play an important role in taking right decision for running the government and building the nation, Inu further said.
The inaugural session was presided over by Professor Mofizur Rahman, Chairmen of Mass Communication Journalism Department, while DU VC AAMS Arefin Siddique, Prime Minister’s Information adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, and BFUJ President Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul also addressed the function.
Chief Information Commissioner Professor Golam Rahman in his keynote speech said, people do not rely on BTV due to its bias reporting, yet some people, who don’t have an alternative way, are compelled to watch BTV.
DU VC AAMS Arefin Siddique put emphasis on responsible and professional practice of journalism to help people enhance their knowledge and awareness.
