The business community in Chittagong expressed concern over the handling capacity of Chittagong Port . This view of annoyance expressed at the meeting of views exchange with the business community at Chitagong Chamber auditorium on Thursday.
Port Users Forum arranged the meeting and President of the Forum Mahbubul Alam presided over it. Member of the parliamentary standing committee on Ports & Shipping , MA Latif MP graced the occasion as chief guest.
The meet demanded to start works of Bay Terminal and Bulk Terminal immediately to face the cargo handling with the increasing trend of imports and exports through this port.
The meet also criticized the Port, Customs and private container depots for lack of coordination among them in the ports operational activities, crisis of handing equipments, container congestion and realisation of excess charges by shipping agents and freight forwarders.
The chief guest in his address said the existing capacity of the port can not be expanded more than 25% and it the present progress of the port is continued uninterrupted , Chittagong Port will be failed to take load of handling by next 5 years. He also said keeping this view of present progress of the port, the construction of the proposed Bay Terminal and Bulk Terminal should be started now. Mentioning the intensifying the country’s development through privatization formula , he requested the port users for mutual cooperation to conduct the port activities.
He also proposed to constitute a committee led by Chittagong Chamber with members from concerned stakeholders. He also mentioned about the shortage of handling equipments and scanning machines at each delivery point .
Only scanning machines now functioning in the port which disrupts quick delivery of consignments .
President of PUF and vice President of FBCCI Mahbubul Alam said as like as quick rental power plant in power sector , private sector’s involvement with the procurement of equipments and operational activities is essential for quick delivery of the consignments.
He also demanded to enhance policy making power of the CPA .
With the views of allegations and criticism, Member(Admn & Planning) of CPA Jafar Alam said in comparison with 2005-06, Chittagong port achieved progress 45% in container handling and 94% in equipments progress.
Besides, 138 container handling equipments now under process of procurement within short possible time.
Chittagong Customs Commissioner Hossain Ahmed said assessment of customs duty , taxes are undergoing in CC H with the similarity of global markets.
Besides, he also emphasized the counseling to officials for better result in duty assessments.
He also mentioned that IT experts from abroad are working in customs house for uninterrupted service of Asaikuda Plus System and hoped for quick solutions of Asaikuda systems.
