Normal activities of port’s handling of imports and exports consignment are going uninterrupted despite hartal, blockade calls of the BNP-led alliance across the country.
The principal port of the country is functioning round the clock .
Sources said in last 48 days from January 1, to February 18 of the current year , a total of 2 lakh 35 thousand 960 TEUs containers were handled which is 13% more than the corresponding period of last year.
In corresponding period of 2014, CP handles only 2,10,305 TEUs containers.
About 10 thousand officials and workers either govt or private sectors are working randomly inside the port . Mentionable that 90% import and export consignments are being handled through Chittagong Port and rest handled by Mongla Port.
Terminal Manager of Ctg Port Ekramul Karim told that the handling capacity of CP was 30 thousand TEUs in last year which now increased to 40 thousand TEUs .
He further said at present about 26-27 thousand TEUs containers are being handled on average per day which is 50% of its capacity and in next 3 months, the TEUs handling capacity will be increased by more 3 thousand TEUs.
Traffic Manager of CPA sources said the loading, unloading activities of the port are going in full swing and the handling of consignments increased comparatively.
Secretary of the container depot owners association Ruhul Amin told this correspondent that in 18 private ICDs in Chittagong, normal activities of the cargo handling in ICDs is continuing.
Port sources said to maintain peace and stability in theport, about 1 000 security men of CPA and 800 Ansars were deployed in port area beside the armed forces.
Fire burns 5 houses : Fire gutted four houses and a garage in separate fire incidents in port city on Saturday.
Fazlul Kader, Telephone Operator of Agrabad Fire Control and Civil Defense Station said, the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a house around 2:30 am and soon spread to the adjacent houses and garage.
