In many cases it is still very difficult for a poor family in Bangladesh to get modern medical treatment after getting sick. That can be said as a true scenario in all the regions of the country. But there are exceptions somewhere also.
A portion of the extreme poor people in coastal district-town Satkhira and Savar upazila in Dhaka are getting modern health facilities through Voucher cards distributed by the Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM). They are going to some private clinics in the town for receiving treatments.
Nurunnahar Khatun, a resident of Gorerkanda-Rahmatpur area under the Satkhira municipality, said, “Three members of my family have been receiving treatment for three years under a Voucher card from the ‘Anwara Memorial Clinic and Diagnostic Centre’ of the town during common illness and also in pregnancy time.”
She also said that the hospital authorities treated them well when they showed the Voucher card. By the card her family got Tk 10,000 for one year’s treatment, said Nurunnahar adding that they need the extension of the facility.
Sufia Khatun, another recipient of the facility in Satkhira town, said that she is a cardiac patient and also receiving treatment regularly from the Heart Foundation & Intensive Care Hospital. She said that it was very tough to bear the cost of the treatment by her family earnings.
Two other members of her family including her husband, Md Ainuddin, are also receiving treatments under the Voucher card facility.
According to DAM, a total of 9076 persons are receiving the medical treatments from 20 private hospitals through 2198 Voucher cards in Satkhira. Dhaka Ahsania Mission distributed the cards under the project of ‘Health and Nutrition Voucher Scheme for poor, Extreme Poor and Socially Excluded People (PEPSEP).
It is also giving the service among the people in Savar upazila in Dhaka district. A total of 16289 people are receiving the facility through 4219 Voucher cards in Savar.
Md Ziaur Rahman, Slum Development Officer of the Satkhira municipality, said that around 35 thousands under privileged people live in 47 slums in the Satkhira town and in the suburbs. Most of them are deprived of modern medical services.
Syed Mizanur Islam, Area Manager of Dhaka Ahsania Mission in Satkhira region, said, “We had started the project in February in 2018 in collaboration with the European Union (EU). Total 20 private hospitals are giving service to the poor people under the scheme.”
“There is no opportunity for the extreme poor and socially excluded people to get treatment services outside the government Sadar Hospital and Medical College. But the Voucher card helping them in this case,” added the Area Manager.
Shirin Sultana, a community volunteer of the scheme, said a total of 20 volunteers are working in 9 wards of the Satkhira municipality to create health awareness among the poor people.
Dr Md Habubur Rahman, a Consultant of the Anwara Memorial Clinic and Diagnostic Center, said that it was very good initiative. The poor people would have benefitted if the project was extended, added the physician.
