The vegetable market in Sylhet City and district Area is volatile. Lower and middle class people are afraid to go to the market.
According to the buyers, they are not able to go to the market and buy the vegetables they need. Vendors said the prices of vegetables were higher due to short supply than demand.
In the last one week, the prices of vegetables have gone beyond the purchasing power of the common man. The vegetables have been damaged in the fields due to heavy rains.
That is why vegetables are not coming in the market as per the demand. However, many buyers claim that price increase is a daily occurrence. The price of any thing is not under control.
According to them, this situation is bearings bad to worse due to lack of supervision of the administration. Turning to the market, it has been seen that the prices of various products have increased in the last one week.
The prices have increased from 10 to 20 taka per kg of vegetables. Poor people are extremely hard-hit over the price spiral. On Monday, green chilies were sold at Tk 180 to Tk 200 per kg which was sold last week at Tk 160 to Tk 175.
Beans are sold at Tk 150 to Tk 180 per kg which was sold a week ago at a price of Tk 130 to Tk 140.
Eggplant is being sold at 60 to 70 taka per kg which was between 50 to 60 taka last week. Uchche was sold at Tk 90 to Tk 110 per kg, but seven days ago it was at Tk 70 to 80.
Been and kushi are being sold at Tk . 50 per kg. Glassware has been sold at Tk 80 per kg, an increase of Tk 10 compared with last week. Cauliflower is being sold at Tk 100 per kg.
Last week it was sold at 70 to 80 taka. Cucumbers are sold at Tk 60 kg, tomatoes at 80 kg and watermelon at 60 kg. Pumpkins have been found to sell at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per piece. Potatoes are being sold at 39 to 40 taka per kg.
But even a week ago it was sold for 35 to 36 taka Per KG. The price of onion is still unchanged. White eggs are being sold at Tk. 32 and red eggs at Rs.36 per 4 pieces. Buyers say the price of vegetables is rising every day.
The prices of vegetables are fluctuating in the morning and afternoon. Storekeepers said the price of vegetables is higher in the market as the supply is less than the demand.
A college teacher Jahangir Alam said, “If the price of vegetables continues to rise, how will people like them maintain their families.” He sought the intervention of the administration in controlling the market.
