A good number of poor families at different areas under the district are earning their living making different varieties of clay products.
Though nowadays many earthen products have lost their appeal but some of them like flower pot, plant pots are still in good demand still in huge demand in both rural and town areas in the country.
Some potters including Suresh chandra, Haradhon of Chhilimpur village under Pirganj upazila and Nirmol, Subash of Palpara in Rangpur Sadar upazila said usually they make different domestic utensils like jars, pitchers, curd making pots, flower pots, coin saving banks and toys.
Most of these traditional earthen es have lost their demand and attraction in the face of modern technology as utensils made of steel, melamine and plastic have become popular among the users, they further said.
Potters alleged that they do not get fair price of their products due to lack of marketing facilities. They are often compelled to sell their products at a price less than the production cost as middlemen always deprive them of fair price.
On account of higher price of wood, mud and other materials the potters now cannot make much profit from their products. Due to lack of adequate capital they are facing setback in running their business and as result many of them have already relinquished their profession and taken up new jobs
Potters said easy bank loan facilities or low-interest loan, could certainly help them expand their business.
