The polls atmosphere across the country is becoming violent day by day with the clash between Awami League and BNP, and internal feud in both the parties increasing alarmingly.
In the meantime, hundreds of leaders and activists of the AL and the BNP also received injuries and at least three others were killed in clashes after the election campaign started.
Chief Election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Wednesday said that the commission felt embarrassed at the Tuesday’s attack on BNP’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s motorcade in Thakurgaon district.
Addressing a programme organised for judicial magistrates at Nirbachon Bhaban in the capital, the CEC said, the commission has also been shocked for death of a political activist in Noakhali.
At the programme, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar said that such violence was not acceptable even on the first day of election campaign.
Ruling Awami League informed the Election Commission that their party men were being targeted all over the country.
“We have informed the Commission that the main target of the violence centring the elections is Awami League men,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Political Adviser HT Imam told the reporters after the meeting with the EC.
The commission has also been informed of the violent incidents that swept Noakhali, Shahjadpur and Faridpur districts.
Meanwhile, the body of a local leader Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League was recovered from a canal of Ishwardi Upazila of Pabna district on Wednesday.
The deceased Asadul Islam Ershad was General Secretary of Ward No-3 of Muladholi Union Awami Swechasebak League.
The family members suspect that Ershad had no personal enemy. So, obviously he was killed for political reason because he was active in AL politics. But they failed to explain who were behind the incident.
BNP candidate for Dhaka 9 seat Afroza Abbas came under attack twice of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in Dhaka’s Kamalapur and Madartek areas on Wednesday morning.
At least 15 supporters of the BNP candidate were injured in the attacks.
Chhatra League men, who are supporters of Awami League leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury, carried out the first attack in Kamalapur, injuring 10 women, Nasir, personal secretary of Afroza Abbas alleged.
Few journalists were also injured in the attack, the official added.
The motorcade of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came under attack in Thakurgaon on Tuesday as he was entering the district to campaign for his candidacy.
Fakhrul is contesting in the December 30 polls from Thakurgaon 1 constituency.
A local Awami League leader was killed in an attack allegedly by BNP supporters at Goaldangi in Faridpur Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Yusuf Al Mamun, 40, Cultural Affairs Secretary of North Channel union unit of Awami League in the upazila.
A local Jubo League leader was killed in a clash between the “activists of Awami League and BNP” in Noakhali Sadar upazila this evening.
Deceased Md Hanif, 24, was Jubo League General Secretary of Ward No. 9 under Aujbalia union, reports our Noakhali correspondent quoting police.
Meanwhile, Human rights activist and co-Chair of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Commission Sultana Kamal at a programme on Wednesday said, “Election brings festivity all over Bangladesh, but the festivity is not for the ethnic people in CHT.”
“There is completely different situation in the hill tracts. Life is not easy there for the ethnic people as Armed forces control everything there,” she said.
“As usual obstacles are created by opponent candidates in election,” she said.
Chittagong Hill Tracts Citizens’ Committee leader Gautam Dewan said, “The wind of election waves everywhere all over the country, but the situation in hill tracts is not congenial for hill people to vote and to engage in election activities without fear and with safety.”
