The deprived candidates of both Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are still fighting for getting nomination to contest in the upcoming 11th National Election scheduled to be held on December 30.
They said that they would do everything to get the party’s tickets.
A candidate of AL wishing anonymity told The New Nation that he was trying to convince Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about his nomination. “I deserve the nomination from AL. I am trying to manage the AL high command,” he said.
Hasan Mamun, a candidate of BNP, said, “I have been working in the Golachipa-Doshmina (Patuakhali-3) area for long time. I feel for my people. The party gave me ticket. But unfortunately, the party’s decision has been changed after Golam Mowla Roni joined the BNP. The people will not receive him.” Meanwhile, the supporters of a good number of influential leaders of AL and BNP were staging demonstration blocking roads and highways demanding party tickets for their candidates.
The grass root level leaders and activists vowed to continue their agitation in different parts of the country despite warning of punitive action from their respective party.
They said that those ministers and MPs, who earned a bad reputation for the party in the past got the nomination again depriving the genuine leaders of the party.
On Tuesday, hundred of supporters of AH Ohidul Haque Aslam Sunny blocked the highway for three hours demanding nomination from Narsingdi-4 where the AL already nominated Nurul Majid Ahmed Humayun.
They put barricade on the road around 9am near the Baroicha bus stand causing a four-kilometre gridlock, Zaved Mahmud, Officer-in-Charge of Belabo Police Station, said.
According to the police official, the supporters of Aslam Sunny staged a peaceful demonstration blocking the highway and no untoward incidents took place.
The agitating supporters said that Majid Ahmed Humayun does not have any popularity in the locality.
The supporters of Hasan Mamun, who earlier got the BNP nomination from Patuakhali-3 and later given to Golam Mowla Roni, brought out processions in different location of the constituency demanding the party ticket.
Gulam Mowla Roni, former lawmaker of AL, joined in the BNP on Monday and immediately got the party nomination depriving Hasan Mamun. The supporters of Hasan Mamun did not take it easily and started agitation against the decision.
Meanwhile, in Brahmanbaria, supporters of Jatiya Party’s incumbent MP Ziaul Haque Mridha blocked Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Sarail upazila for not choosing their leader from Brahmanbaria-2 Constituency.
Thousands of supporters thronged Sarail Biswa intersection and blocked the highway setting car tyres on fire around 11:45am, our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports.
Jatiya Party started distribution of nomination letters yesterday and picked Jesmin Noor for the constituency dropping the name of Mridha. His supporters say that Jesmin Noor is not a popular figure in the constituency as she lives in isolation.
The protesters freed the highway around 1:30pm after Mridha announced to go for a tougher movement if the party did not change their decision within 24 hours.
