As the electioneering is set to come to an end on the midnight of April 26, the mayoral candidates and their
supporters on Thursday carried out tremendous campaigns to have the voters into their folds.
The major candidates and their supporters put in their best efforts to draw the attention of their voters by moving from one area to another during their intensified campaign to make sure their victory on April 28 polls.
Besides, the streets, lanes and alleys of the two cities were abuzz with the loudspeakers bagging votes for both mayoral and councilor candidates.
Meanwhile, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday skipped her electioneering for lack of safe vehicle as her bullet-proof SUV was damaged on Wednesday in an attack by ruling party men at Banglamotor crossing.
Pro-Awami League mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq began his electioneering from the city’s Banani area in the morning. Later, he addressed a rally at Ershad School field in Korail Slum area.
Addressing the programme, he said not only the Prime Minister’s support but also the support of the voters is needed to be elected as a mayor.
Exchanging views with the Korail slum dwellers, he said, “There’re many problems in the slums of Dhaka. The slum dwellers are my sisters and brothers. Once elected, I’ll look after them.”
He also promised the Korail slum dwellers that no slum will be evicted in the future before rehabilitating them.
Later, he carried out frantic campaign at Banani Bazar, Gulshan DCC market, and Gabtoli areas seeking vote for him.
BNP-blessed mayoral candidate for DNCC polls Tabith Awal started his electioneering from city’s Gudaraghat in Badda area around 10 am in the morning.
Talking about Army deployment during city polls, he said Election Commission (EC) took two different types of decision regarding to Army deployment; whatever, “We want a fair election; and hope, EC will do every thing to arrange fair polls.”
Expressing concern over attack on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, he said it is EC’s responsibility to provide adequate security to the people who are electioneering; So, EC must give enough security to Khaleda Zia who served the nation as Prime Minister for three times.
Tabith also conducted electioneering in East Rapura, West Hajipara, West Rampura, Omar Ali Lane and Mirpur areas and begged vote for his election symbol ‘Bus’.
Awami League-backed mayoral aspirant for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Sayeed Khokon on Thursday began his electioneering in the Old part of Dhaka.
Flanked by local Awami League leaders and both rebel and party-backed councilor contenders, Khokon sought votes in Chankharpul, Nimtoli, Nazira Bazar, Siddik Bazar, Agamasi Lane areas. He distributed handbills, leaflets among the voters in the areas.
Taking to reporters during the campaign, he said attacks on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia are creating panic among the voters.
“We don’t support such act. Attacks on Khaleda Zia and her motorcade are spreading fear among the voters,” Khokan said.
Observing that attacks on the BNP chief is hampering the solemnity of the election environment, he said, “We want a peaceful and fair environment for election so that people can cast their votes without any fear and in a peaceful manner.”
“I deserve preference and vote from every voter as a child of Dhakabashi,” he said begging votes from the voters.
Later, he conducted another election campaign in Supreme Court area and sought votes from lawyers. Dr Abdur Razzaque, coordinator of Awami League’s Dhaka South City Corporation election committee, Abdul Matin Khasru, MP, Barrister Amirul Islam, were present on the occasion with Khokon and they also sought vote for him.
Farhana Sayeed, wife of Sayeed Khokon sought votes for her husband at Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka in the morning. He also attended a views-exchange programme with Sarak Paribahan Malik Sramik Oikya Parishad at Fulbaria Bus Terminal at Gulistan.
