Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the politics of BNP is still hanging over the caretaker government and election issues instead of serving the common people.
“The people of the country are now fighting against the dengue and recover the loss of flood. But instead of standing beside the people BNP is doing politics for polls,” he said this on Wednesday while speaking at a discussion here.
Responding to a demand of BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the information minister said the next general elections will be held on time after expiry of the tenure of the present government.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote (BSJ) organized the discussion marking 89th birth anniversary of Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib at Jatiya Press Club.
Planning Minister MA Mannan attended the function as special guest while BSJ President and former lawmaker Sarah Begum Kabori was in the chair.
Awami League (AL) Deputy Publicity and Publication Secretary Aminul Islam, AL Dhaka South city unit General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad, Organizing Secretary Hedayetul Islam Swapan, AL leaders Advocate Boloram Poddar, Liaqat Ali Khan, Kutub Uddin Chowdhury and BSJ General Secretary Arun Sarker Rana, addressed, among others, on the occasion.
The minister said Bangladesh is moving ahead and struggling for materializing the dream of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
But, BNP cannot accept the country’s progress under the dynamic leadership Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Dr Hasan, also AL Publicity and Publication Secretary, said.
Dr Hasan Mahmud said country’s overall poverty rate has been reduced to 20 percent from 41 percent over the last 10-years of Awami League government.
Bangladesh is now a food-surplus country and exporting food abroad. But a quarter can’t see the success as it is always engaged in conspiracy, he said.
Pointing out the applause of many world leaders for Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in different socioeconomic areas over the last ten years, the minister said Bangladesh has exceeded India and Pakistan in many key economic and social indicators.
Per capital income of people of Bangladesh has been raised to about US$ 2000 from only 600 dollar in 2005 in the last ten years, he said.
Paying rich tributes to Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Dr Hasan said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took many important decisions in consultation with her in difficult times. She always helped Bangabandhu take the right decision, he added.
“Bangamata considered the whole country as her family….when Bangabandhu was in jail, she ran her family as well as the party,” he said.
Urging the new generation to know about the life and works of Bangabandhu and Bangamata, Planning Minister Mannan said it would help building an ideal society.
