Politics now in businessmen’s pockets: President

President Abdul Hamid on Monday lamented that the country’s politics has gone into the pockets of businesspeople which is the most stigmatised chapter of the country.
“It’s a matter of regret that today’s politics has gone into the pockets of businesspeople…this is the most stigmatised chapter of the country. We have to get rid of it,” he said.
The President said this while addressing a Citizens Gathering at Ashtagram Pilot High School ground in the upazila. Mentioning that public representatives have to work for the welfare of people to move the country forward, Abdul Hamid said: “Without honesty a politician can’t implement what he or she wants to do. There’re many ways to earn money. But no one should choose politics to make money.”
He went on saying, “I had been elected MP for several times from this area. I did politics maintaining honesty. That’s why people-both from the ruling party and opposition-didn’t talk against m. I’m not a dishonest man.”
The President observed that the development of a specific area is not possible if the public representative for the area misappropriates money allocated for development purpose.
About his son Razwan Ahmed Towfik, the local MP, the President said, “I didn’t beg vote for my son as I’m President. I didn’t beg vote for Awami League though I was involved in the politics of the party for my whole life…even I didn’t talk against any party.”
On the development of his home district, he said, “I’ve urged the Prime Minister for setting up a university in the district and she’s agreed. I hope the work would begin next year.”
Earlier, the President inaugurated ‘President Abdul Hamid Bridge’ in Ashtagram upazila.
The 341-metre long bridge will link Ashtagram Sadar, East Ashtagram, Deughar and Kastol Union.
