Politicisation of people belonging to other professions is not compatible with democracy. The seeds of weakening and eventually killing of democracy are to be found in the process of politicisation.
In our country it is the idea of politicisation that eventually defeated the democratic objective of the Liberation War. All our struggles and all our sacrifices for democracy have gone with the wind. Soon one party system formed as a revolutionary government.
One cannot become revolutionary at will. To succeed and to make revolutionary government work one needs a group of master conspirators. The loyalty the system demands is secured through spying on each other. Spying system has to be all pervasive covering every aspect of life within the state.
If the system of socialism or one party government is good for the people then why it cannot survive free speech and free choice of the people?
Free speech makes us human. No human society is conceivable by denying free speech. Public opinion is unknown and unheard of under socialism. Free speech will be its death.
The economy of communist system is based on project development. Success is determined by the success of the projects. Human development as development of inherent human values like free thinking is no consideration.
If democracy must have a chance to grow then it cannot be built on the framework of politicisation of one party system. In a weak democracy the failed political leadership listens to bureaucrats and embraces the idea of dictatorship in desperation of not giving up power.
What is not understood is that dictatorship is the defeat of politics and political leadership. Power mongering bureaucracy wins. Fear of government is what makes the system last till a counter revolution brings its pathetic end.
Life under socialist dictatorship is comparable to life in prison. The welfare of the prisoners is unimportant but discipline must be maintained. The prisoners must behave and not free to express where it hurts.
Democracy is freedom of speech and public opinion is the legitimacy of state power. Because the government is to ensure human welfare and the values of life and the needs of human life must have all the priority. Development of projects must mean development as desired by the people.
It is servitude to accept that government knows best what is good for the people.
Professional journalists and professional lawyers must maintain their professional freedom to be the protective forces of democracy. We are talking of democracy but not protecting the essential protectors of democracy.
The press freedom is the people’s sovereign right to free speech. The press embodies free speech on behalf of the people and protects free speech on behalf of the people. The journalists cannot be party activists to be voiceless.
In the same way the lawyers must remain professionally independent as a force of independence of the judiciary. In our country the lawyers as party activists have their allegiance to party leaders. In truth, since the independence our lawyers were not fighting for the rule of law or the independence of the judiciary.
The independence of the judiciary was established through a judgement of the Supreme Court and was given effect to under an army backed caretaker government in 2007. But the independence of the judiciary has been rendered meaningless under the present political government. The fear but not the rule of law rules us.
Teachers cannot remain honest and dedicated teaching knowledge when they prefer party activists for political favouritism. As party activists they chose to demean themselves to be party workers. As teachers they give up academic freedom. What could be more unfortunate than the teachers who do not care about academic freedom.
That is not the kind of servile existence we fought to have. Our kind of living has to be human living without depriving us from free speech and free choice. Nothing is more degrading or inhuman for a free people than to live in fear. We cannot cease to be what we are RATIONAL.
