Increase in incidents of murder, recovery of bodies, dacoity and gang rape, is indeed, alarming. Scores of sensational crimes are taking place across the country every day to the grave concern of the people. Incidents of many crimes however, remain unreported. Police on Saturday recovered the decomposed body of a young doctor from his residence at Comilla Medical College Hospital. He was identified as Hasibul Hasan. In a separate incident Nazrul Islam, a teacher of Goyhatta Dakhil Madrasha under Ullahpara Upazila, Sirajganj was stabbed to death on Saturday. Ruhul Amin stabbed him to death for protesting stalking. Amin was detained by the police. Meanwhile, Golam Azam, owner of a cap factory at Savar was slaughtered inside the factory on Saturday. Mostafa Kamal, a partner of Azam has been held in this connection, police said. In a separate incident the bodies of two employees of a mill at Narayanganj were recovered on Sunday. The victims were identified as Aziz (55), a night guard and Hossain Mia (40) a worker of the mill. These are only some of the examples of crimes taking place across the country daily. At least 15 people were either killed or found dead in Narayanganj district in January this year while the number was 14 in February and 20 in March, another report said adding five people were killed in five days of the current month. The body of Rajib Ahsan, a teacher of Asian University of Bangladesh was recovered last week from the river Balu in Rupganj. At least 50 people were either killed or found missing in Narayanganj in three months from January to March this year, which is seen by the people as a very alarming sign. Narayanganj is one of the few districts, where extortionists, land grabbers and drug peddlers have been active for long, enjoying the blessings of influential people regardless of political affiliations. During the AL led government the situation has worsened as some people having close connections with top leaders of the ruling party continue to enjoy immunity for their misdeeds, it is alleged. Even the mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy has taken part in people’s demonstrations for action against criminals enjoying political blessings. No visible step appears to have been taken so far to punish the culprits or curb crimes there. People irrespective of age, profession and gender, are becoming victims of murder or abduction and bodies are being found days after they go missing, Rafiur Rabbi, Vice President of Narayanganj Nagorik Committee told the media. Rabbi’s son Tanvir Mahmud Tawki was found dead in Narayanganj town on March 8, 2013, after he went missing. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is expected to file a charge sheet in this case against Ajmeri Osman, son of Nasim Osman, MP. School boys, teachers, traders, housewives, newspersons and even day labourers are becoming targets of killers, police said adding some of the incidents took place over family feuds or business or personal rivalries. Human right activists however, said, that the situation has taken a turn for the worse since the 10th parliamentary election on January 5 last. They described it as a demonstration of social decadence. Incidents of murder, dacoity and kidnapping were higher in 2013 compared to that of the previous year, media reports said quoting official sources. A total of 1,008 murders including politically motivated murders were recorded with police across the country in between January 1 and March 31, 2013 as against 987 in 2012. As many as 231 incidents of kidnapping took place in the first quarter of 2013 as against 182 in the corresponding period of 2012. A total of 3971 incidents of violence against women, including 812 rapes were recorded in the first quarter of 2013 as against 4,705 incidents including 827 rapes in 2012. A total of 312 killings took place in the country in January, 313 in February and 383 in March last year as against 304, 320 and 363 respectively in 2012. Meanwhile, 504 people were beaten to death by angry mobs during the last four years, revealed a survey report of Manobadhikar Bastabayon Sangstha. Top police officials however, told the media that the law enforcement agencies are always alert and taking action whenever criminal incidents are reported to them. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police of Munshiganj Habibur Rahman was withdrawn for his failure to maintain law and order situation in the district centering around the Gazaria Upazila elections. UP Chairman Shamsuddin Prodhan, Chhatra League leader of Gazaria Mahbub Alam Jhotan and wife of BNP backed chairman candidate Abdul Mannan were killed in elections related violence, reports said. Incidents of dacoity and gang rape have taken place at different houses of some villages including Rarri Khal, Srinagar under Munshiganj recently. Not only dangerous crimes but other crimes are also being committed in increasing numbers with or without police collusion. Corruption has also become more endemic. Nothing can be expected to be done without paying graft. Abuse of power is the other name of corrupt governance. The reasons behind the surge in crimes taking place in the country in recent years can be attributed to the increased politicisation of the law enforcement agencies on one hand and also to giving little importance to the ground realities of the issue by the concerned authorities on the other. The government functionaries including the Anti-Corruption Commission people have no fear of indulging in corruption. Everybody knows political loyalty protects all kinds of crime and corruption. No government can survive safely by allowing crime and corruption to thrive unchecked.
