CRUELTY against children has become an obnoxious syndrome of moral degradation and disorder that leads society to mortally bankrupt as reflected in the recent killing of two siblings in the capital allegedly by their mother. It highlights the latest incident of cruelty against children across the country. As per media outlets, law enforcers at first suspected the parents and maternal aunt of the children and confined them on Wednesday for interrogation. Meanwhile, the insane mother on Thursday confessed her involvement with the murder. Children are the prime target of the social beasts due to their tender age which lends itself to exploitation, abuse, violence and neglect; and here the power of laws fails to defend the helpless. According to media reports it was initially believed that the children died from food poisoning but autopsy suggested that the victims might have been murdered. There were bruises on both the bodies. The family initially claimed that the children had died after eating food brought from a local Chinese restaurant a day earlier. A fortnight before four children in Habiganj were found in a sand sack which remains a mystery. In the last one and half months, at least, 45 kids were brutally killed across the country, where law enforcers are in the dark. An amicable environment for the future generation is an unsung pledge of any civilization and elder’s fondness to younger is a natural course; which has unfortunately been severely violated here. Psychologists can better reveal the causes behind the social cruelty but remedy must come from changing the social outlook.Laws are not helpful if political culture of violence goes on unimpeded. In every aspect of social life tension and insecurity of violence are making life difficult for almost everybody. An ordinary person has nowhere to go for help. The whole social life has become fractured. Humanity is in crisis in Bangladesh. Our so-called politics is making cruelty and crime widespread. What is most frustrating is that the real cause may not be known for all sorts of unaccountability and the real culprits and true story may remain unexposed.
