Law enforcers are yet to arrest Md Shahed, Chairman of the Regent Hospital, the main perpetrator of issuing fake Covid-19 test certificates despite drives in different parts of the country.
Sources said RAB also conducted drives at the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital on Monday.
RAB and police both are trying to nab him (Sahed). We think we can give information whereabouts of Regent Hospital owner Sahed Karim very soon,” said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at his Dhanmondi residence on Friday.
No matter how powerful he is; he will be brought to book,” Kamal added.
“Prime Minister did not spare any lawmaker, even her party leaders are not spread, whenever they found guilty. You talk about whom (Sahed), there is no question to spare him if his guilt is proved,” the home minister added.
The Minister said the fugitive Regent Group chief phoned him to know what would be his step in this regards.
“He called me. He said his everything is being sealed. I told him that the action is being taken as he had done
something bad. He asked me again what he should do now. I asked him go to court and surrender, Asaduzzaman said.
Home ministry sources said they identified Mohammad Shahed as a fraud in 2016 and sent a letter to the then Inspector General of Police for action.
The letter said Mohammad Shahed had been claiming himself as a high-ranking army official to cover up his misdeeds.
He has at least 32 cases at several police stations across the country. He was even behind bars for two years, the home ministry noted.
Police have already slapped a travel ban so that the Shahed cannot flee the country. Meanwhile, RAB on Thursday morning held his close aide Torikul Islam alias Tarek Shibli from the capital’s Nakhalpara area.
A law enforcement source on Thursday evening said Shahed was under their surveillance and could be arrested anytime.
“We have obtained a lot of vital information from Tarek. He will be shown arrested in a case already filed,” Rab Director (Legal and Media wing) Lt Col Ashik Billah said.
Police Headquarters sources said they had already written to the immigration police so that Shahed cannot flee the country.
Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has placed Tariqul Islam alias Tareq Shibli, a key aide to Mohammad Shahed, on a five-day remand in a case filed over issuing fake coronavirus test certificates and collecting money from patients.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan passed the order yesterday after the investigation officer of the case Md Alamgir Gazi, an inspector at Uttara west police station, produced him before the court with a seven-day remand plea.
A contractor name Amlesh Ghosh from Tangail said Regent Hospital owner Md Shahed owes him Tk21,74,000. But when he asked for the money, he received death threats.
Earlier, RAB has sealed off main office, Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital after various allegations, including issuing fake COVID-19 certificates, surfaced against authorities of the private facility.
Later, a case was filed with Uttara West Police Station against him and 16 others in this connection, and police issued a ban on him to leave the country.
