SM Mizanur Rahman :
Police have failed to submit charge sheet against the accused persons in connection with the sensational seven murders case in Narayanganj even after 11 months.
Police, on the other hand, said it is because of the delay in extradition of the key accused, Nur Hossain, from India. However, they said
that they would wait for his (Nur’s) return up to this month. And then, they would go for framing charge sheet next month.
Ten and a half months have already elapsed since the gruesome seven murders in Narayanganj on April 27, 2014. A total of 30 people, including 20 members and three ex-officials of elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), were arrested in connection with the murder.
Meanwhile, a total of 17 people, including three RAB officials, have made confessional statements before a senior judicial magistrate under the section 164.
The main accused Nur Hossain, who managed to cross the border after the murders, was arrested in Kolkata. Nur, who had been on the run since the incident, was arrested in India on June 14 for illegal entry.
When contacted, State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The New Nation on Friday that they had taken initiatives to bring back Nur Hossain from India soon through Benapole border in Jessore.
“I think we are at the final stage to bring back Nur. But now it’s a matter of other country (India),” he said, adding: “If the Indian authority sends him (Nur) back now, we are ready for that.”
In this context, the Asaduzzaman said, “On March 1, we have sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry and the police headquarters to take necessary measures to bring back Nur Hossain home.”
Officer-in-Charge of Detective Branch of Narayanganj police Mamunur Rashid Mandal told The New Nation yesterday that “We have obtained sufficient evidence and information to frame charge sheet against the persons involved in the murders. But as the main accused, Nur Hossain, has not returned yet, we are facing difficulties in framing charge sheets.”
” Even if Nur Hossain was not extradited from India within this month, we would frame charge sheet next month and it will be submitted before the court,” Mamunur Rahman, who is investigating the case, said.
He added on March 1, the Home Ministry sent a letter to the Indian government to extradite Nur Hossain, the mastermind behind the sensational seven-murder in Narayanganj.
The letter reads: “Nur Hossain could be handed over to Mamunur Rashid Mandal at a convenient date and time of India. The handing-over procedure will be held at Benapole immigration check post.”
Apart from DB police, separate probe bodies formed by the Ministry of Public Administration; CID police and RAB; and the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) placed their progress report to the attorney general’s (AG) office.
All the arrestees, including commanding officer of Rab-11 Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander SM Masud Rana gave confessional statement under the section 164 and they are now languishing in jail custody.
On April 30, bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul Islam and Chandan Kumar Sarkar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers, three days after their abduction. Later on the next day, another body was recovered from the river Shitalakhya.
Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted from Fatullah area. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at the District Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Two cases were filed in this regard. In both the cases, Nir Hossain, also a councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation, was made the main accused.
