UNB, Dhaka :
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan on Monday said police will remain deployed in front of Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan political office as long as they are needed for her security.
Dismissing the claim that the BNP chairperson has been kept confined to her office, the junior minister said she was not confined, but additional cops were deployed for her security.
“The police, I think, will remain there as long as her security is needed…if the security concern is gone, the police will be withdrawn today,” he told reporters replying to a question at his office at the Secretariat.
Asked why the police locked Khaleda’s office gate yesterday noon, Asaduzzaman said he has no knowledge about it and talk about it only after knowing why the gate was locked.
He said, if the BNP chief wishes to go anywhere, she can inform the police, and it depends on her where she wishes to go.
Replying to another question if Khaleda Zia can be allowed to go to BNP Nayapaltan central office, the state minister, however, said, “It’ s the Police Commissioner (DMP) who knows where she’s safe.”
Asaduzzaman said the Khaleda Zia’s security has been beefed up as the intelligence agencies have information that they would indulge in acts of sabotage and anarchy.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday imposed a ban on holding public rallies and gatherings in the city fearing violence as two major
political parties-Awami League and BNP- and their allies announced programmes and counter-programmes for Monday, he noted.
The junior minister claimed that Awami League did not hold any rally or formal programme in the capital. “I went around many places. I found them standing in queues. They were not holding any formal programme,” he said.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia remained ‘confined’ to her Gulshan political office since Saturday night.
