Bangladesh Police has taken an initiative to form a fund for supporting treatment of drug addicts. The fund will initially be launched this month with over Taka nine crore from the donation of one day’s salary of the police personnel, official sources said.
“We need a coordinated effort for fighting against drug abuse, which has now become a major global challenge,” Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque told BSS.
He said the police department is forming a fund with donation from the members of the country’s law enforcing agency to support free treatment of drug addicts and help them get back to normal life.
Underscoring creating more awareness among people about the consequences of drug abuse, the IGP urged the members of the civil society to be more vocal and take a leading rule in combating drug abuse.
He asked the field-level police officers to make the anti-drug movement into a social movement involving people from all walks of life.
“At the same time we have to take initiatives to ensure proper treatment of the drug addicts,” Hoque said.
He said a list of drug addicts would be prepared by all police stations across the country after collecting information from union level to provide treatment to the drug addicts who are unable to afford their own treatment cost.
