Staff Reporter :
Police sources have been killed not only working for police, but also due to the involvement in crime, said police and intelligence sources.
They became the target for assisting in the arrest of professional terrorists and drug traffickers, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (DC-media) Walid Hossain said to The New Nation, “They are in life risk, they should hide their identity”.
Officials of police department should not quote their names as police conduct ‘source-based’ investigations to arrest culprits. Police use them to gather information and evidence about criminals. Police arrested the criminals with the information given by the sources.
But these sources unfortunately often identify themselves as police, while doing professional duties. They control the extortion syndicate and the drug business in the area. Some
time police sources provide the false information to the concerned senior police officials for their own financial gain or unethical convenience, official of police said.
Sources in the Police department said that in many cases, the police members are accused of extorting money from the common people by intimidating them. When the information behind the arrest of the criminals is leaked, the life of the source falls in danger. The source becomes the target of the terrorists. As a result the terrorists murder the police sources, he added
On the night of September 6, RAB source Abul Kashem was chased by Ratul and Tartin on a motorcycle.
They stabbed Kashem one after other and escaped. After four days of investigation, Ratul, Masud Hossain and Rezaul Karim were arrested.
A month ago, Kashem handed over drug dealer Nurjahan to RAB in Rajabazar area. Ratul, who was arrested, had an immoral relationship with Nurjahan. Following this,RAB source Ratul planned to kill Kashem.
Nazrul Islam, 30, another Police source was stabbed to death due to previous hostilities at Tongi in Gazipur city on March 30, 2020.
On February 8, 2014, a court sentenced three of the five accused to life imprisonment in a case filed in connection with the death of a man named Johnny in police custody at Pallabi Police Station in the capital. Two of the five accused, who were sentenced to seven years in prison, were originally working as ‘sources’ for the police.
On July 29, a bomb was exploded in Pallabi thana. It was taken to the room of Inspector (Investigation) Imranul Islam on the second floor of the building by a police source, Reazul. The blast occurred when Reazul was pushing the bomb, investigation report says.
Qutub Uddin, another police source, was hacked to death in the T&T gate area of 23 Metangi-Kaliganj Road in 2016.
Russell Mia, a police source, was killed on May 7 of the same year in Ershadnagar, Tongi, after he was caught by drug dealers.
Former IGP Shahidul Haque told The New Nation that in most of the police source killing cases, those who deal with criminals and keep track of them are such personal sources.
“It is the responsibility of the concerned police officers to control them and verify the information received. If the police officers cannot verify the facts themselves, they cannot understand which is true and which is false. In that situation, the police officer is to be responsible for it, he pointed out.
Former IGP further said “Police official must understand source dynamics, character and mentality. He also said that in many cases it had been seen that the source is controlling the police officer.
This is the problem of the police officials. Who should have to control the source with intelligence. Officers of the special branch of the police are trained in this regard.
Meanwhile, the human rights activists allege that police often use the police sources for their own interests. In many cases, the police officials have become so dependent on sources that they carry out raids without verifying their identities. As a result, many innocent people became victims of lawsuits and their lives become miserable.
About sources involved with crime, Walid Hossain said whoever is the culprit he will be brought under the law.
“Police officer must be alert that all sources may not be involved with crime activities.” He said
Police sources hired to find out the information of the big criminals. In that case, financial benefits should be given to the sources, which is known as ‘source money’. However, when the money is paid by the authorities, it is called ‘Operation Money’.
A police source of Wari thana of DMP said to The New Nation That they work for police but police do not give them ‘source money’. “We have our families, so we earn money in different way.
