Court Correspondent :
A Dhaka Court on Thursday deferred the submission of police report to May 17 in the case filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and three others for the death of 42 burn victims.
Magistrate Maruf Hossain of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka passed the order setting the new date as the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gulshan Police Station sought more time on Thursday to submit
the report. The case blames them for deaths happened during BNP-led 20-Party alliance’s agitation in the last three months. Other three accused persons are BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, Khaleda Zia’s advisers Professor Emajuddin Ahmed and Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury.
President of a pro-government organization, Jononetri Parishad, AB Siddique, lodged the case with the CMM Court of Dhaka on Feb 2 while Magistrate Atiqur Rahman directed the OC of Gulshan Police Station to probe the matter and submit the charge sheet.
In his complaint, Siddique claimed that 42 people had died from burns throughout the country until Feb 1 and the national exchequer suffered huge losses due to the agitation. Khaleda Zia called blockade from Jan 5 along with occasional shutdowns for indefinite period.
In late January, another case was lodged against the BNP Chief for aiding and abetting an arson attack on a bus at Jatrabari of the capital. Police sued 19 BNP leaders, including Khaleda Zia, while 18 others were charged with masterminding the incident.
