POLICE Bureau of Investigation is going to press charges against 16 people in Nusrat murder case before the court today. “Sixteen people, including madrassah principal SM Sirajuddoula and local Awami League leader Ruhul Amin, were involved in the killing of Nusrat Jahan Rafi,” PIB chief Banaj Kumar Majumdar said while briefing reporters at its Dhanmondi Headquarters. A total of 92 people have been made witnesses in the case and seven of them have already testified before the court. Nusrat was set afire on April 6 by people loyal to the Principal of Sonagazi madrasah in Feni and died on April 10 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The role of PBI in cracking the sensational Rafi murder case is really appreciating. Usually, the police of our country focus on ‘bigger’ crimes which lead to a neglect of every day delinquencies and hooliganism. The reason is clear — a large number of police have to remain busy in providing safety and security to VIPs.
OC of Sonagazi Police Station was found involved in Rafi murder case. He was responsible for patronizing madrasa principal and his cohorts. Besides, he made viral the video which was taken when Rafi went to police station to file case. SP of Feni didn’t take any action though he was informed about the incident. Except departmental withdrawal, no legal action was taken against them. Though OC was named as an accused; he was given enough time to escape arrest.
We also have witnessed same attitudes from the rights activists. None of the human rights organisations especially works for women’s rights did take any positive role to create pressure on the authorities to arrest the killers. Rather general people along with ordinary women brought out protest rallies and arranged human chains demanding arrest of Rafi’s killers.
If the police high-ups try to protect their juniors who are involved in the crimes then how do we expect a crime-free society? Why the police cannot stay aloof from political activities? We think involvement of police in the crimes will be everyday’s story, if the present trend continues. Only submitting charge-sheet in some specific cases without nabbing real criminals cannot bring any positive result.
