Police have strenuously denied the allegation that they have favoured Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony in the double murder case investigation.
On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner Monirul Islam told reporters at the DMP media centre the allegation that Rony was given preferential treatment for his mother’s position as a ruling party parliamentarian was groundless.
This comes a day after a Dhaka court sent Rony to jail in the case at the end of a four-day remand.
Monirul said the double murder was an incident that had no clues.
“The Detective Branch of police has specific strategies to probe such incidents and arresting Rony in connection with the double murder was part of the investigation process. “The arrest was made because police want to get authentic information for solving the case,” he said.
Monirul said Rony was treated the same way as any other criminal and his family identities had no impact on the investigation. “We are taking measures in line with the law.”
Early on April 14, shots were fired indiscriminately from a car in the capital city’s New Eskaton, injuring rickshaw puller Abdul Hakim and auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali.
The two men later died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. On the night of April 15, Hakim’s mother Monwara Begum filed a case with Ramna Police Station in this connection but did not mention any name. The Detective Branch of police was tasked with carrying out the probe on May 24. His mother Pinu is the general secretary of Mahila Awami League and a reserved-seat parliamentarian.
