Police Memorial Day-2017 was observed for first ever in the district as elsewhere in the country on Wednesday amid honoring the police members who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
Marking the day, the district police chalked out elaborate programmes included bringing out rally, placing floral wreaths on the martyred policemen at a temporary setting up monument and distributing flower of sticks to the close relatives of the martyred police members.
Besides, a post rally discussion was also held at the police lines of the town this noon. Newly joined superintendent of police (SP) M Mashrukur Khaled attended the function as the chief guest while additional SP Abdullah Al Faruk presided over it.
The meeting was also addressed, among others, by district PBI in-charge Anwar Hossain, additional police superintendent in service Abu Sayeem Prodhan, additional police superintendent circle-A Rabiul Islam, assistant director of RAB Abu Kaisar, officer-in-charge of Shaghata thana Mosarrof Hossain, general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Abu Bakar Siddique, mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Jahangir Kabir Milon, freedom fighter Afzal Hossain and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman.
The speakers expressed their deep shock at the tragic death of 13 police members of the district in the line of duty at different parts of the country from 2011 to 2015 side by side with lauding the courageous role to maintain law and order situation.
The speakers also demanded to take quick action and exemplary punishment against the miscreants, who killed the on duty police members, without delay.

Some high ranking police officials made the observation while addressing a discussion to mark the Police Memorial Day-2017 at city’s Police Lines conference hall on Wednesday.
They also placed floral wreaths at the altar of the monument at the Police Lines earlier in the morning.
Local police authorities chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the day. More than 800 policemen and their family members joined the programme.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Khurshid Hossain and Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Shafiqul Islam addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Superintendent of Police Moazzem Hossain Bhuiyan in the chair.
Additional RMP Commissioner Sarder Tamij Uddin, Additional DIGs Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan and Nisharul Arif and RAB Commanding Officer Lt Col Mahbub Alam also spoke.
DIG Khurshid Hossain said the police force has always been with the family members of the deceased policemen adding that police department would stand by them during their well and woe.
“Never think that you are helpless. Come to us without any hesitation during any crisis. Doing something better for you means doing the same for our own family members”, the DIG added. On the occasion, family members of the deceased policemen were awarded.
