A campus brawl between rival factions of ruling party affiliated Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in two adjacent campuses in Chittagong has compelled police to chase out all leaders and workers of the organisation.
Supporters of the Chittagong Awami League President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury clashed with General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddiun’s supporters at Chittagong College and Government Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College campuses on Monday to establish their respective hold on the campus, disturbing the ongoing class XI admissions.
Eye witnesses said that when a Chhatra League group staged a sit-in, police intervened and asked them to disperse.
Instead of complying they clashed with police, leaving admission seekers and their guardians terrorised.
The police responded by caning them and driving them out of the campus.
Chittagong College Principal Jesmin Akter told the agency that classes have been kept suspended for Monday and Tuesday to ensure a smooth admission process and no student other than those seeking admission are permitted inside the campuses during these two days.
Meanwhile, former Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury supporter and Chhatra League leader, Mahmudul Karim has accused Chakhbazar OC of having him go through a body check and then resorting to beating him with a baton when he tried to enter the campus in uniform.
Refuting the allegation, OC Aziz Ahmed said that police were acting in compliance with the principal and the commissioner’s instructions, forbidding students other than those seeking admission into the premises.
He said that Karim clashed with the police and in the process, a police personnel received minor injuries.
The two campuses had been under Islami Chhatra Shibir control for three decades.
But tables turned in favour of the Awami League after a fiasco at the Shaheed Minar in December last year.
