A Dinajpur court on Wednesday sentenced a police constable to life in prison on charges of raping a schoolgirl in Dinajpur in 2013.
Dinajpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Sharif Uddin Ahmed handed down the verdict in a crowded courtroom in the presence of the convict Nabiul Islam (31), a constable of industrial police.
The court also acquitted two persons — Nurul Islam and Kawsar Yasmin Chuti — in the case.
According to the prosecution, the convict along with two others abducted the girl, then 17 years old, from Dinajpur city on April 20, 2013. Nabiul then raped her after promising to marry her.
Later, Saidpur police rescued the girl and arrested the accused.
The girl’s grandmother then filed a case against Nabiul and two others with Dinajpur Sadar Police Station.
In early 2014, the police submitted a charge sheet against the accused.
The court handed down the verdict yesterday after examining the evidence and witnesses, said Court Inspector Israel Hossain.
