Police constable held selling firearms in Chattogram

A constable of the Industrial Police in Chattogram was arrested by members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) while he was selling illegal firearms in the port city’s Laldighi area on Friday night.
A case was lodged with Kotwali Police Station on Saturday night in this regard.
The arrestee has been identified as Sarup Barua hailing from Rangunia upazila of Chattogram, police sources said.
Seeking anonymity, a senior police official said, “Acting on a tip-off, a team of DB north caught Sarup Barua red handed in front of Jila Parishad Market on Friday night while he was waiting in plainclothes for a party to sell firearms to.”
The CMP sources said after the arrest, Sarup introduced himself as a police constable. Later, he was taken to DB North Office in Laldighi with the firearms and interrogated there.
Senior police officials were informed of the matter.
Sarup was recently transferred to the industrial police from CMP.
Meanwhile, police have suspended the constable and departmental action is underway against him, said Md Solaiman, superintendent of Chattogram Industrial Police.
