Police activities in Chittagong have been heightened following the discovery of a militant den at Mirsarai.
There have been ‘block raids’ in the city besides a drive to gather information on people living in rented houses, said Chittagong Superintendent of Police Noor-e-Alam Mina.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided a hideout by Harkat-ul-Jihad militants in last December. But the police were involved in any major counter-terror operation in the port city during the past year.
Two militant suspects were detained at Comilla’s Chandina on Tuesday after they hurled explosives at policemen who were checking a bus on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
Mahmudul Hasan, one of the suspects, was taken on a police raid that night. The operation on a house at Mirsarai led to the discovery of 29 hand bombs, nine machetes, 280 packets of bearing balls and 40 explosives gel.
The owner of the two-storey house, ‘Ridwan Manzil’, told police Mahmudul rented the lower storey on February after claiming he was businessman.
Detectives have found proof that members of the newly-revived Jama’atul Islam Mujahideen or Neo-JMB used the house to make explosives, said Deputy Commissioner Mohibul Islam of police’s counter-terror unit.
All police stations in the city have been told to increase surveillance, said SP Mina.
“They have been instructed to interact more with locals and gather information on tenants. Senior officials have been given the task of conducting block raids,” he said.
