Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Tuesday auctioned off 3,000 kg imported onions which were stolen from the port while unloading.
The auction was held at DB’s port office in Dewanhat Dampara Police Lines around 12:00pm, our Chattogram staff correspondent reports, quoting a police official. Abu Bakkar Siddique, additional deputy commissioner of Port Zone, said a team of DB police detained three persons along with 120 sacks of stolen Turkish onions from Bangla Bazar ghat area of the city on December 5.
The onions were seized while those were being taken to Khatunganj market of the city for sale, said the police official.
“A syndicate containing labourers and transport workers, who unloaded the goods from the port, stole the imported onions,” said the ADC.
Following a court order, police today organised an open auction where eight businessmen took part in bidding. After the auction, M/S Sabbir Trader of Khatunganj brought the onions.
ADC Abu Bakkar said the money will be deposited in a government exchequer.
