The police attacked a protest rally called by left-wing student organizations in the city’s Shahbagh intersection to censure the rampant increase of fuel prices and ‘looting’.
 The attack took place on Sunday evening.
It has been alleged that the attack was led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Ramna Region of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Harun Or Rashid.
As part of the pre-announced programme to protest against the price hike of fuel, the leftist organizations broughtout the procession from the TSC area of Dhaka University under the banner of progressive student organizations at around 6:30pm.
The marchers went around Shahbagh and Kantaban intersection and again came to Shahbagh intersection and met the rally on the footpath next to the main road.
At the last stage of the rally, the police suddenly started charging of batoons on the leaders and workers of the left organization.
 Along with the activists, the top leaders of the organizations were also severely beaten up.
The police beat the leaders and removed them to the National Museum.
The leaders claimed that at least 20 activists were injured in the attack.
The Central Vice President of the Student Union (Nazir Amin Chowdhury-Ragib Naeem) Anik Roy said that the police attacked the rally without any provocation. At least 20 party activists were injured in the attack and are admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said.
