The incident of rapes and post-rape murders are not stopping. Last Friday a bullet-hit body was found at night in Khulna. What is important to note and more disturbing is that the criminals do their crimes bravely without fear. Those who are arrested later for the crimes could be the right ones or even wrong ones because nobody knows how long they will be in jail without trial, meaning without knowing the truth.
Prosecution is satisfied if the arrested persons are kept in jail. Arrest by police has to be taken as conviction though in law nobody is guilty till found so by a competent court of law. Whole justice system is dreaded by the innocent people for fear of police arrest, better known as police justice system and the courts refusing bail.
Filing of police cases without helping speedy trial is not a success story for the police. The success of police in combating crime is in the conviction and not in mere arrest of some people at their sweet will.
The police is everywhere but criminals are also busy everywhere committing crimes almost freely. Our judges are under pressure to show justice and not to grant bail to alleged offenders kept in prisons. We say it with a large amount of certainty that if bail is granted liberally the number of police cases will be declined drastically.
The nation is bearing the burden of heavy expenses for the huge contingent of police. The main role of the police cannot be guarding the official buildings. For guarding official buildings such highly trained police are unnecessary. Thousands of police are idly passing time guarding official buildings. Another huge number of police are with the VIPs for their individual protection and show of power. In short, we are not anxious to use police force in preventing crimes in public life.
For crimes in public life police are seen quick and active after the crimes have already committed. The arrests will be made sweepingly and authorities will want us to believe that our police have been very successful in arresting the criminals. After that the very need for their early trial will be forgotten.
It is also to be mentioned that politics and crimes have become enmeshed in our country for making justice difficult. Knowing this the judges should retaliate by releasing FIR named parrots arrested using their legal discretion.
The police should be anxious, as the people’s force, to know what their responsibility is and how to safeguard their own reputation as people’s police. We believe police can effectively act to prevent crime if they are engaged to do so for the general public.
We suggested it before also. Let there be VIP police for the VIPs. So that the regular law enforcers can act impartially for protecting the people from the miscreants and hard criminals.
