Police, AL men clash at Chakaria: 7 injured

Staff Reporter :At least seven person including two police personnel received injuries in a clash between the activists of ruling Awami League’s front organizations at Chakaria in Cox’s Bazar district on Thursday.The vehicular movement on Chittagong-Chakaria highway was interrupted for about one hour due to the clash. Thousands of homebound passengers became stranded at that time.Police said the clash erupted when the law enforcers tried to evict makeshift shops from footpath beside Chittagong -Cox’s Bazar regional highway in a bid to reduce traffic jam ahead of Eid-ul Fitr.But the street vendors allegedly led by some leaders of local Jubo League and Sainik League suddenly attacked the police when the law enforcers went there to clear the way in the afternoon. When contacted, Superintendent of police [SP] of Cox’s Bazaar Shyamol Kumar Nath told The New nation over phone: “We asked them not to set up any makeshift sops and clear the roadside and footpath for the sake of smooth communication on the highway. But they did not pay heed to our notice.””The cadres of Jubo League and Sainik League attacked the police when they went yesterday to clear the footpath. Police arrested four persons from the spot and taking preparations to file a case with the concerned police station in connection with the violence.
