“It has not been possible to curtail crimes due to the political interference”, said Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed at a view-exchange programme organized by the National Anti-Tobacco and Drugs Jote at the National Press Club in the city on Thursday.
“If the police is given ample time to contain crimes, the rate of crime will be substantially reduced,” he said.
He said, “We are working for controlling drug abuse. In the last three months, the DMP arrested over 400 drug traders and they were given punishment by mobile court.”
Later, the police commissioner asked the members of Police not to smoke at public places when they are on duty.
National Anti-Tobacco and Drugs Jote President Niamat said, we have come here with mainly two proposals. One is punishment for smoking at public places under Tobacco Control (Amended) Act 2013 and ban on sale of tobacco products. “We seek the help of the DMP in this connection,” he said.
Mili Biswas, DMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic), Abdul Jalil, Additional Commissioner (Administration) and Altaf Mahmud, President of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) were also present at the program.
