The Chairman of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) M Badiuzzaman said that the corruption could not be eradicated from the society due to the political leaders’ non-cooperation.
He said this at a programme arranged by Satota Sangha, an anti-graft committee, at Mamun Community Centre under Savar Upazila in Dhaka district on Saturday.
“The corruption is not new in our country. It has been prevailing for decades”, he said. But nowadays, the corruption has taken a ‘dreadful shape’.
The corruption, the chairman went on, is practiced in developed countries also but the government of those countries work to reduce it.
“We can easily work also to reduce the graft from the society if the political will is rendered “.
Criticising the false assurance of the political leaders at time of polls, he said, it seems that their pledges would build up a golden Bangla but the reality is found totally different. “The politicians forget their promise after polls”. On Rana Plaza issue, Badiuzzaman said, the commission cannot summon Sohel Rana, owner of the building that collapsed last year killing over 1100 people and making innumerable injured, for the legal complexities as he is in the jail now.
If the court comes up with a directive in this regard, only then the commission will be able to summon him, which will be associated to conclude the graft matter of Rana.
He urged the government to arrange a chapter in the textbooks based on prevention of corruption, which will form an anti-corruption mentality among the students. “Today’s students will come to the state power next time. If they grow up with a hatred against corruption, the country will be free from the graft”.
The chairman administered oath against corruption to the students, who were present at the programme, against the corruption.
ACC Director General Dr Shamsul Arefin, its Dhaka Divisional Director Emranul Huq and Savar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Quamrul Hasan Molla were speaking at the programme. While the Upazila Anti-Graft Committee President Shawkat Ali presided at the programme and its General Secretary Salauddin Khan moderated.
