Poet Shamsur Rahman’s 12th death anniversary observed

The 12th death anniversary of Shamsur Rahman, one of the major poets in modern Bengali literature, was observed on Friday in a befitting manner.
Marking the anniversary, different socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths at the grave of the poet at Banani graveyard and arranged Doa Mahfil.
Jatiya Kabita Parishad and Kabi Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parishad and poet’s family members placed wreaths at the poet’s grave at the Banani graveyard at 10.30 am.
Kabita Parishad President and Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor Poet Dr Muhammad Samad, General Secretary Poet Tariq Sujat, actor Shahdat Hossain Nipu, Poets Hanif Khan and Yusuf Reza were present on the occasion.
Later, a doa and milad mahfil was held seeking eternal peace of departed soul of the poet.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote paid tributes to the poet by placing a wreath at the grave of Shamsur Rahman at 10am. Sangskritik Jote presidium member, lawmaker and actress Sara Begum Kabari, Jote’s general secretary Arun Sarker Rana, central leader MA Quader Khan, actor Habibullah Ripon, actresses Shampa Rahman and Parul Akhter Lopa and actor Shah Alam were present on the occasion.
The death anniversary was also observed at Shamsur Rahman’s ancestral village home at Raipura of Narsingdi through different programmes.
Shamsur Rahman was born on October 23, 1929 and brought up at Mahuttuli in the capital. He took part in various socio-cultural movements and played a vital role in critical moments of the nation.
Shamsur Rahman was a poet and journalist. He served the now-defunct Dainik Bangla as the chief editor for long.
His first book of poetry ‘Prothom Gaan Dwityo Mrittyur Agey’ was published in 1960.
Major themes in Shamsur Rahman’s poetry and writings include liberal humanism, human relations, romanticised rebellion of youth, the emergence of and consequent events in Bangladesh, and opposition to religious fundamentalism.
The poet earned a number of prestigious awards at home and abroad, including Bangla Academy Award in 1969, Ekushey Padak in 1977, Swadhinata Dibosh Award in 1991. Shamsur Rahman died on August 17, 2006 in Dhaka.
