Dr Forqan Uddin Ahmed :
oet Jasim Uddin was respected in terms of poetic analyses and literary judgment. His writings came to us with the prospects he had earned. Considering the importance of attaining, standard observation and review pattern is highlighted in this article. The features and characteristics have been reflected in his writings. As a matter of fact, Jasim Uddin was a poet of rural touch and cultural aspects. Modern urban life has not been spoken by him deeply. In spite of that, he was obviously considered as modern poet. Because he did everything like a modern poet. Jasim Uddin was very much careful about the literary style and forms of his poems. He did not go beyond his contemporary period. Rather he was a serious spokesman of his time. The simplicity of the subject matter of his poems with its forms and style struck us with wonder. His works tell the interest of the common people, with extraordinary literary beauty. His literary art got the flavor of separate identity.
In modern times when cities have become the pivotal center for life many poets have become city centric; specially the city of Dhaka and Kolkata have been made the prime center of literature. By ignoring the rural life, some of the modern poets have the city tension, chaos, conflicts and pains of toiling masses in their literature. In modern times, where urban development is in its peak along with the idea of some contemporary writers, Jasim Uddin concentrates himself to rural life. This guides him to become a rural poet. He has been underestimated and called a rustic poet in his time. But with all those opposition in 30’s, his exposure with the quality of separate identity made him a unique poet.
Meanwhile, he came to the close contact of Dr Diensh Chandra Sen, a folk admirer who employed him as a folk procurer. In Calcutta University Jasim Uddin was given the responsibility of collecting folk songs.
Virtually he found a right gateway to explore his poetic genius. The fact is that he started collecting folk song of his own accord before that. The above statement proves that he was a poet of separate identity.
It appears to us that Jasim Uddin is the real painter of rural life. Like all world races and nations, villages are the symbol of simple life to every Bangali. The social life of the Bangalees is in a process of rotation for thousands of years. A cottage beside paddy field, the green vegetable garden, a farmer’s wife standing beside black cow- all remind us the universal symbol of very colorful Bangali life.
On the other side the urban mechanical life is very much boring and troublesome. The artificiality of city life can not touch our soul. Rather we are more attracted to the beauty of villages. The village and its pictorial things, villagers of different trades and life style-all have been portrayed in Jasim Uddin’s literary works. Specially his poems become nostalgic to the city dwellers who have left their villages. Here is the difference of poet Jasim Uddin from all other Bangalee renowned poets. People find his/her childhood when they read him. As a child of six or seven years reciting the poems of Nazrul and Tagore, the name Jasim Uddin also attracted me very much. Jasim Uddin could make a space in our heart by his literary talent, and love to nature and depicting the life of ordinary village people like Asmani. Opening book, we used to read and recite:
Rakhal chhele, Rakhal chhele barek fire chao
Banka gnayer pothti dhore kothay chole jao
Again as-
Asmanire dekhte jodi tomra sobe chao
Rahim uddir chhottro bari Rasulpure jao
Jasim Uddin was the true and very dependable representative of Bengali folk culture.
In the medieval period, a sort of verses was dedicated to gods and goddesses. Mymensing Geetika also belongs to this group. Generally, the composer of folk song and lyrical poems are called rural poets. Jasim Uddin belongs to that class.
In Jasim Uddin’s the field of the embroidered quilt’ and the ‘gypsy’ wharf the matters are related to rural life and those collections have great literary value. These are of exceptional and very rare. His story style, use of words, rhyme, rhythm meter, prosody, images-all have the fragrance of modern style, in application of words in his pastoral poems. About the poem Kobor (grave) Polli Jononi (Rural mother) Jasim Uddin was very much particular.
The dialect is seldom used in those works. In Jasim Uddin, rural characters are not brought with hundred per cent of amenities of rural elements. Though village life or village characters are chosen and treated with care and curative process, in his style and system he could bring the literary taste for the intellectuals and for the aristocrats of the society. In their viewpoint Jasim Uddin is a modern poet. Matters seem to us rural; but from analysis, we find urban sentiments also in him. The way he represented is full of essence by modernism. An immortal space has been conveyed with the taste of modern poems by him. So poet Jasim Uddin is inclusive in present trend. Jibanananda Das, Amiyo Prasnanya Mitray, Samar Sen, Sudhin Dutta and Ahsan Habib – all are pro-modern. But none is similar to other in points of their state of mind. It is Poet Jasim Uddin who could bring the folk trend with the style of modernism. He was successful in his mission.
He claimed it and he deserved it. He could mix up the village culture, folk tradition and nature of rural life extraordinarily with the style and concept of modernism.
