UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister’s advisor Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury has revealed the government will be moving forward with its plan to generate 500 MW solar power by the end of 2015, despite not gaining the expected support of a donor agency.
“We were hoping that we’ll get help from Asian Development Bank (ADB) to achieve the goal. We didn’t get the expected help. But we should not wait for others to help. Rather we should help ourselves,” he said while addressing a seminar on renewable energy at Sonargaon Hotel on Monday.
He also urged the Bangladeshi scientists, researchers and those looking to invest in the energy sector to come up with a solar-based cooking system.
Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) organized the seminar titled: “Practices and Success Stories of Renewable Energy in Bangladesh”, with its president Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed in the chair.
The function was also addressed by Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) chairman Tapos Kumar Roy, IDCOL executive director and CEO Mahmood Malik, and German-based Friedric Naumann Foundation country representative Dr. Najmul Hossain, director of the Institute of Energy at Dhaka University Dr. Saiful Haque, and president of Bangladesh Solar and Renewable Energy Association (BSREA) president Dipal C Barua.
Dr. Tawfiq Elahi said the local researchers and investors should concentrate on invention of a solar-based cooking system, as there is no existing model in the developed world which can be customized for use here. “So we have to invent our own solar-based cooking system.”
